Meithrinfa Gymraeg Derwen Deg, a project that has stemmed from the work of Menter Iaith Conwy and local volunteers has officially opened.
The Frist Minister, Carwyn Jones, opened the nursery officially on the 4th of February.
Nia Owen, The Parent Director of the project, was n charge of events and Meirion Davies, Menter Iaith Conwy and Gwyn Roberts, Derwen Deg’s Chairman presented some of the work of the children to the First Minister.
The idea came to the helm in August 2013, when Nia Owen, a local parent contacted Menter Iaith Conwy to discuss her intention to open a Welsh Medium Nursery in Llandudno Junction, with a property in mind, and came to understand that the local Menter Iaith had also been toying with the idea.
In May 2014, local parents and Menter Iaith Conwy formed a Cooperative Company – Meithrinfa Gymraeg Derwen Deg to lead the project.
Carwyn Jones said:
“I’m very pleased that Menter Iaith Conwy have been so proactive in supporting the local community in establishing a Welsh Medium nursery on the northern coast of Conwy.
“Encouraging families to use Welsh is an elemental part of the Work to sustain and increase the use of the language, and a Welsh medium nursery is key to the success of the language.
“It has been great witnessing the support local people have given this facility, which only emphasizes the local demand for such a facility.”
