This year new officers have been appointed at Menter Iaith Flint and Wrexham and Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych in order to help communities to set up community groups or to offer support to existing groups.
The purpose of the project is to encourage groups to hold events to increase the use of the Welsh language in their local areas, with Development Officers attending the meetings to offer assistance where needed, including assistance in applying for grants. This project was funded through the Welsh Government’s Rural Communities – Wales Rural Development Program 2014-2020, which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Cadi, Menter Iaith Flint and Wrexham’s Bilingual Communities Development Officer, says:
“Over the last few months I have been offering support to create new community groups and support existing community groups to hold bilingual events in their areas. Including Family Fun Afternoon, corn-doll making sessions, craft sessions and more. And I’m about to help a group who want to create a community orchard. This project has lots of different possibilities from Swish nights, quizzes, walking club, fitness sessions, craft sessions and much more! I wanted to hold an event in Mold to promote the project and show other communities the kinds of events available to them through the project.”
On Thursday 14th November Swishing Evening will be held at Mold Rugby Club, a fun evening of exchanging clothes. Cadi explains;
“I am passionate about helping the environment and doing the small things at home to reduce my carbon footprint. Thought the project, it’s a great opportunity to promote waste reduction and reuse. The swishing event is an opportunity for people to swap out clothes they no longer wear. It may be a dress that you once wore to a Christmas party and not worn it since, so the clothes must be of a high standard with no tears or stains. People are welcome to bring clothes, shoes, jewelery and bags with them! “
Individuals will be able to bring the clothes in advance and swap several items for swishing tickets, and use these as cash to buy other items. It’s a fun way to get new clothes without having to spend and create waste. Cowbois will also be there to sell Welsh hoodies and t-shirts, with entertainment from the Lleisiau Clywedog Choir over a glass of prosecco.
