{"id":17580,"date":"2026-01-14T09:47:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T09:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/press-release-croeso-x-nightworks-2026\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T12:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:32:07","slug":"press-release-croeso-x-nightworks-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/en\/press-release-croeso-x-nightworks-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"PRESS RELEASE &#8211; Croeso x Nightworks 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Swansea Council\u2019s Croeso celebration is back this St David\u2019s Day weekend, with the return of Nightworks, a vibrant programme of bilingual, free-entry gigs across the city\u2019s grassroots music venues.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks_2-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks_2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks_2-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks_2-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The programme kicks off on <strong>Friday the 27<sup>th<\/sup> of February<\/strong> with an evening of post-punk and alternative rock at <strong>The Bunkhouse<\/strong> headlined by <strong>Slate<\/strong>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Emerging from the depths of Cardiff\u2019s burgeoning music scene, and heirs to their country\u2019s lineage of storytellers, are <strong>Slate<\/strong>. The four-piece reimagine the gothic foundations of new-wave, charging their sound with melodic force and the white-knuckled intensity of post-punk. Their introductory singles \u201c<em>Tabernacl<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>St Agatha<\/em>\u201d found praise in the NME, Clash, So Young, DIY and more, as well as radio champions in Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music, and Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1. A reclamation of Welsh identity, and love of poetry which is woven into their live performances, are influences which announce Slate as a fascinating and necessary arrival.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Slate are joined by the melodic slacker-rock of <strong>Los Blancos<\/strong>, alt-rock quartet <strong>VAIN<\/strong>, and <strong>Pypi Slysh<\/strong>, the 6-piece project of Sam Stevens and Si\u00f4n Teifi Rees from Ceredigion which also features members of Mellt and Slate.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p><strong>Saturday the 28<sup>th<\/sup> of February<\/strong> sees a co-headline gig from <strong>Twat Union<\/strong> and <strong>HMS Morris <\/strong>at the <strong>Elysium<\/strong>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Six-piece feminist comedy punk outfit, <strong>Twat Union<\/strong>, affectionately known as \u2018The Twats\u2019, bring their trademark, provocative humour and immersive show to Swansea as part of their UK tour.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p><strong>HMS Morris <\/strong>are a band who thrive at the crossroads of art-pop, theatricality, and fearless exploration. Their unforgettable live shows have taken them across the globe \u2014 from Texas to Tokyo and Toronto and to stages at Green Man Festival, Glastonbury, Other Voices and many more \u2014 dazzling audiences with a unique blend of joyful chaos and meticulous musicianship.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Joining them on this bill delivered in collaboration with Mioe Creative Productions and R*E*P*E*A*T Records will be the X-Ray Spex inspired art-punk of <strong>The Nanaz<\/strong>, and the noise pop of <strong>Flatcat<\/strong>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Amina Abu-Shahba from Mioe Creative Productions said, \u201c<em>We are delighted to be collaborating on this female led line-up as part of our St David\u2019s Day celebrations entitled, Women Who Create Wales. We\u2019re looking forward to a night of excellent live music.<\/em>\u201d.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>On the evening of St David\u2019s Day itself, <strong>Gwilym Bowen Rhys<\/strong> plays a special intimate solo show at the <strong>T\u0177 Tawe<\/strong> venue. Hailing from Eryri &#8211; the mountainous North West of Wales &#8211; Gwilym has been singing in his native Welsh language since he can remember, giving him a deep connection with the traditional songs and music of his land. His music combines old\u00a0melodies and lyrics, intricate guitar arrangements, and a rich powerful voice that effortlessly swings from velveteen sweetness to earthy grit.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/mentrauiaith.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Nightworks-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Gwilym is supported by <strong>Llio Heledd<\/strong>, a musician originally from Morriston in Swansea, and after studying in Aberystwyth and Utrecht, now based in Cardiff. There, she began to compose songs with the guitar and using cynghanedd. The use of this ancient mode of Welsh poetry can be seen in her songs and in her debut single &#8220;<em>Afon<\/em>&#8221; which is a reflection on the experience of growing up in Swansea.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>All gigs are free to attend but capacities are limited, and entry can be guaranteed by booking a free ticket for each night through the venue\u2019s platforms or by visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitswanseabay.com\">www.visitswanseabay.com<\/a><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The Croeso entertainment programme is delivered in partnership with <strong>Menter Iaith Abertawe<\/strong>, Swansea\u2019s Welsh language initiative. Menter Iaith Abertawe\u2019s work involves creating opportunities for people of all ages to use and enjoy the Welsh language across the City and County of Swansea.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The <em>Croeso x Nightworks<\/em> programme forms a part of Swansea Council\u2019s wider <strong>Croeso <\/strong>event, a festival celebrating all things Welsh. In addition to the live music programme, there will also be cookery demonstrations, street entertainers, workshops, art and crafts, and a children&#8217;s trail across Swansea city centre between Saturday the 28th of February and Sunday the 1st of March 2026.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Councillor Elliott King, Cabinet Member for Culture, Human Rights &amp; Equalities at Swansea Council, said: \u201cThe <em>Croeso x Nightworks<\/em> programme provides a fantastic opportunity to discover new artists in the City Centre at Swansea\u2019s grassroots live music venues. Vibrant new bilingual artists are at the heart of Croeso, as a celebration of Welsh pride.
