Communities are at the heart of the Mentrau Iaith, with each Menter working closely with their local communities to increase the use of Welsh through a variety of means. The Mentrau Iaith are pleased to announce the 3 shortlisted projects for the Mentrau Iaith Awards;

IwcadwliCered: Menter Iaith Ceredigion

Iwcadwli is Aberystwyth’s ukulele orchestra that performs extensively at local events introducing Welsh music in a unique and fun way to various local visitors and audiences. Welsh is the language of the rehearsals and songs, however, many of the members are Welsh learners and see Iwcadwli as an invaluable opportunity to gain confidence in using the Welsh language on a daily basis.

Derwen Deg Nursery – Menter Iaith Conwy

Answering the lack of Welsh medium childcare in the coastal area of Conwy County, Menter Iaith Conwy worked closely with members of the community to create a new social enterprise to provide a Welsh-medium nursery. Meithrinfa Gymraeg Derwen Deg now provides care for tens of children every day and employs 12 members of staff who work through the medium of Welsh.

Profi – Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr

The purpose of Profi scheme is to develop young people’s employability and increase their self-confidence in order to create a thriving, naturally bilingual community. By offering CV support, language awareness sessions and work placement assistance, Profi supports local regeneration and encourages young people to stay in their communities.

The category is sponsored by the Wales Co-op, a co-operative that works with people, communities and enterprises to change lives for the better. It works for a fairer, greener economy.
