Ras yr Iaith from strength to strength

Ras yr Iaith, the only world-wide race that promotes the Welsh language is expanding.

This year the race, the third since its inception, will visit new areas of Wales, and will, for the first time, visit the North East and the South East of Wales. The Race will start in Wrexham on the 4th of July and finish in Caerphilly on July 6th offering three full days of running, noise, energy and enjoyment while celebrating Welsh in communities across Wales including Llanrwst, Bangor, Menai Bridge, Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, Haverfordwest, Tenby, Siant Clears, Carmarthen, Llanelli, Ammanford, Ystradgynlais, Clydach, Pontardawe and Porthcawl.

Various organisations across Wales also benefit from the Race as the funding received will be distributed in the form of grants. The money raised by the last Race held in 2016 was shared, between about forty five Welsh-language organisations across the areas visited.

The Race is organized by Mentrau Iaith Cymru, Owain Gruffydd, Chair of Mentrau Iaith Cymru, says:

“We are very happy to be able to lead on the arrangements to spread the Race’s message to new places this year. In 2016 over £42,000 was raised in grants for organisations to promote the Welsh language in their areas. As a network of entities that exist to increase the use of Welsh in communities it is pleasing to see the race growing every time and can make a difference for Wales.”

Everyone is very welcome to take part in Ras yr Iaith, groups of friends, schools, families, organisations or businesses can take part in the Race by running or supporting on the side of the road, by stewarding, or by sponsoring part of the Race.
