A programme of free Welsh language events and activities for children, young people and families will be available across Swansea again this summer thanks to Menter Iaith Abertawe, their partners, and support from Swansea Council’s COAST fund.
The holidays start with three days of Welsh language playschemes for children aged 8-11. Children under 8 are also welcome with an adult. These schemes aim to allow children to learn by playing through the medium of Welsh. The sessions will offer sporting activities, arts & crafts, circus skills, and much more! The sessions will run between 10:00-12:00 from Monday the 22nd to Wednesday the 24th of July at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr, and limited spaces for all three days are available to book now.
Friday the 26th of July will see the summer session of the PlanTawe family festival. A collaborative event between Menter Iaith Abertawe, Menter Iaith Castell-nedd Port Talbot and Cymraeg i Blant, PlanTawe is a free session for children of all ages and their families. This summer’s event will feature games, song sessions, crafts, and the opportunity to meet Magi Ann and other characters for the youngest children, as well as activities such as Ukelele workshops for the older children. This event runs between 13:00-16:00 in Clydach’s Waverley Park, and there is no need to book in advance.
In the evening following this event, there will be a free gig with Mei Gwynedd and his band, as well as several local artists. This gig is open to all ages, and there will be a fully licensed bar for adults attending. This gig takes place between 19:00-22:00 and free tickets are available to book through TicketSource. This event is supported by the Mynydd y Gwair Wind Farm Community Fund.
Chwarae Annibendod will visit the Tŷ Tawe Welsh language centre in the heart of the city on Thursday the 1st of August for a messy play session. This session is suitable for children aged 0-5 years and will contain plenty of opportunities for the children to get their hands messy! The session will start at 11:00 and last roughly 2 hours. Limited spaces for this session are available to book now.
Wednesday the 7th of August will see the National Play Day celebrations returning to the National Waterfront Museum. Menter Iaith Abertawe have programmed the Welsh language provision as part of the day which will include story time sessions with Magi Ann in addition to numerous play opportunities. The event is open to children of all ages and starts with a Quiet Hour between 10:00-11:00 before continuing through to 14:00. There is no need to book in advance for this event.
The world-renowned hip-hop artist, Mr Phormula, will visit Tŷ Tawe on Wednesday the 14th of August for a special Welsh language workshop! This 4-hour session starting at 11:00 will enable attendees to develop their beatboxing, rap, and music production skills. This session is suitable for those aged 11-18 and the limited spaces can be booked now.
On Thursday the 22nd of August, there will be opportunities to create some special artwork in a step-by-step doodling workshop with Rhys Padarn of Orielodl. There are two sessions – one at 10:00 for pupils from years 3-6, and a second at 11:30 for pupils from years 7-9. Both sessions are available to book now.
Siani Sionc returns to Tŷ Tawe on Saturday the 7th of September for another fun session of Welsh song and dance suitable for ages 8 and under. The show will start at 11:30, and free tickets are available to book through TicketSource.
